Saladin Suite : A Room with a View of History

Nestled amidst its gardens and fountains, overlooking the surrounding vineyards, Étoges stands as a unique witness to History, quietly waiting for its own story to be told. Let us begin with what we consider our most iconic sanctuary: the Saladin Suite.

The name Saladin was not chosen by chance; it is an homage that dates back to the year 1189. It refers to the Sultan "Salah ad-Din," who took the Baron d'Anglure—a former lord of Étoges—prisoner during a crusade in Jerusalem. When the Baron was unable to raise the ransom during a period of leave granted by the Sultan, he honorably returned to his captivity. Moved by such integrity, Salah ad-Din (whose name would later evolve into "Saladin") granted him his freedom, on the condition that the name Saladin be bestowed upon the firstborn sons of his lineage.

As a tribute to this legacy, it was only fitting that one of our most exquisite suites bear this name and showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of our artisans. Located within one of the medieval turrets, the suite received meticulous attention during its restoration. Its four-meter-high canopy bed was built and hand-sewn on-site by our master upholsterer. The traditional Oriental red of the walls was faithfully restored by our colorist after extensive historical research. This vibrant hue perfectly complements the window woodwork, framing a breathtaking view of the park, the fountains, and the century-old bald cypress. Furthermore, our interior designer, collaborating with local antique dealers, carefully curated furniture pieces that bring this story to life, starting from the very antechamber that leads into this truly unique space.

This is where the magic of Étoges lies: often in the details you cannot see, and in the constant care we provide to our guests—and to our ultimate host, the Château d’Étoges itself.
